Are you ready to “dot the travel” industry with .Asia?

01 Oct 2007
Mariel Gonzalez

THE Internet has proven to be an invaluable resource for the travel industry. With the emergence of .Asia, the Asian travel industry has the opportunity to change the way it conducts business and marketing on the web..Asia a region-centric Internet domain that “aspires to become a nucleus, intersection and breeding ground of Internet activity and development in the region.”According to DotAsia, the Hong-Kong based non-profit internet registry operator behind the .Asia domain, the opportunity is there to “dot the travel industry” with the goal of creating an Asian identity for the regional travel industry and enrich Asian travel content from both local and international sources.“This is the first time we are reaching out to the industry in specific. Travel within Asia is growing significantly as Asia Internet demand becomes one of the hottest topics. We believe that the scope and vision of .Asia provides value to companies in the travel industry as it provides a new tool for marketing Asia-wide travel and tour products,” said DotAsia CEO, Edmon Chung.“We realise that many travel agencies and providers actually have the word ‘Asia’ in their company name. So, a .Asia domain name would be natural for them. Also, the natural way for people to look for things is to focus on scopes. For travel, the scope is naturally geographic-based, and Asia is a natural term people think of when searching for travel products in the region,” Chung explained further.Think tours.asia, hotelsandresorts.asia, meetings.asia or flights.asia.“Relevance is one of the most important aspects of the overwhelming sea of information online today. Endusers value direct navigation to high relevance content. A .Asia domain name provides an easy to remember, short and relevant domain name for end users to find what they are looking for online,” Chung says. “Asia itself is a natural word which is also a type-in term for searches online. This improves the ranking of .Asia domains when users search for information from Asia.”As the first top-level-domain headquartered in Asia, DotAsia is looking for pioneers to take advantage of the new domain.“.Asia opens a new frontier on the Internet for the region, and marks an important milestone in the emergence of Asia as a global leader in digital marketing. We believe that this is a golden opportunity for [the travel industry] to acquire prime cyber real estate in Asia and get on the fast track for attracting the world’s largest and fastest-growing market,” Chung concluded.
