Australia sees increase in tourist arrivals in 2007

SYDNEY – According to Australian Bureau of Statistics, Overseas Arrivals and Departures, there were 5.64 million visitor arrivals to Australia for the twelve-month period from January to December of 2007, an increase of two percent compared to the same period of 2006. For this same period, visitor arrivals from North Asia region (China, Korea, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan) reached 850,400 an increase of 4 per cent which China experienced an double digital 16 per cent increase compared to the same period of 2006.



The latest report by the Tourism Forecasting Committee (TFC), forecast inbound visitor arrivals to Australia to grow by 4.7 percent to reach 6 million in 2008, with visitor arrivals from the North Asia Region expected to grow by 15.6 percent to reach 946,000 inbound arrivals in 2008.



In-line with the growth in arrivals, the Total Inbound Economic Value (TIEV) of inbound tourism is forecast to grow from $22.2 billion in 2006 to $23.9 billion in 2008. TIEV is also expected to grow in the North Asia region from $3.9 billion in 2006 to $4.4 billion in 2008. This will be driven by positive GDP growth in the region with China expected to record double digit GDP growth in 2008.
