Australia’s international arrivals rebound in February

Daily news, 10 Apr 2008

SYDNEY – According to new figures released yesterday, aster a sow start to the year in January, international tourism to Australia rebounded in February 2008, growing by six percent compared to the same month in 2007, Tourism Australia (TA) MD Geoff Buckley said.

The new figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that international visitor numbers have strengthened in February 2008 with 543,500 visitors, after falling by 2.6 percent in January 2008, compared to January 2007.

Most of Australia’s major markets posted strong results in February with increases in visitors from New Zealand (+13 percent), the United Kingdom (+3 percent), the USA (+14 percent), China (+4 percent), Malaysia (+8 percent), India (+31 percent), and Germany (+3 percent).

"At the same time a few markets such as Japan and Hong Kong are still being significantly impacted by external factors which continue to affect overall visitation to Australia,” Buckley said.

Looking forward, Buckley said the outlook for international tourism to Australia was for another year of modest growth in 2008, similar to 2007.
