Melbourne leaves other cities green with envy

Daily news, 24 Apr 2008

MELBOURNE – The city is well positioned to embrace the international meetings industry’s demands for “greener” business events, according to a new report released by the Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau (MCVB).

“Melbourne’s Green Credentials” was commissioned by the MCVB to establish how well equipped Melbourne is to host large international business events which are environmentally responsible.

“The environmental impact of Business Events is a growing consideration when buyers are deciding which destination to book. Business events generate vital export dollars for Victoria, with international delegates to conferences and exhibitions spending five to six times more than international tourists,” MCVB’s CEO, Sandra Chipchase said.

“Therefore, it’s important for us to be aware of, and to promote, the innovative, unique and even award-winning environmentally friendly initiatives the Melbourne Business Events Industry is adopting. Promoting Melbourne’s “Green” initiatives will assist us in doing this.”
