MANILA – The first quarter of 2008 signaled a strong start for the Philippines’ tourism sector.
Tourist arrivals grew by eight percent to reach 790,888. Chinese visitors posted the highest increase at 33 percent, while Korea continued to rank as the number one source market with 175,147 visitor traffic.
Tourist spending amounted to US$1.02 Billion, with Korea accounting for the biggest bulk. The Scandinavian region, Germany, Russia, Canada and Hong Kong registered double-digit gains.
The Philippines’ Department of Tourism said it will continue its efforts to maximize the economic value of tourism. Given current infrastructure capabilities, the sector will explore new and innovative ways to attract the most valuable tourists.
