Staying power

01 Aug 2008

Diethelm Travel (Thailand) is a renowned agency in South-east Asia. Maarten Groeneveld, managing director, shares how the company reached the success it enjoys today.

Business philosophy

Our philosophy is to live our core values of trust and integrity in all our dealings with staff, customers, suppliers and partners in an open, caring and innovative manner whilst contributing to the communities in which we operate. This philosophy results in strong relationships with our customers and a very open and direct approach towards them, as well as suppliers and staff.

Success factors

Throughout 51 years of operating in Thailand and surrounding countries, we pioneered the inbound travel industry, and have set standards in the business throughout South-east Asia. Diethelm Travel was often the first large operator to establish itself in under-developed markets, hence aiding to development of staff, standards and products.

Challenging periods

In recent times, these must have been during SARS, bird flu and the tsunami - three events following each other with short intervals. The industry had little time to recover from one event, and the other happened. However, it was remarkable how strong the business bounced back every time, which increased confidence in South-east Asia’s tourism potential.

Facing challenges

Despite tough times, we maintained our operating standards and followed our business philosophy. This is not always easy, but we firmly believe that this has resulted in strong relationships with staff, customers, suppliers and partners. Our corporate head office gave us great support in this, which obviously helped us tremendously.

Ultimate goal

After opening in Thailand, where started in 1957, we expanded into South-east Asia and now operate in 11 countries. In the past two years, we opened Diethelm Travel India, and are soon starting in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The goal is to be recognised as the best inbound operator in the world by everyone we are involved with. Therefore, many more Diethelm offices will follow soon.
