SINGAPORE – Mention “airplane food” and you’ll get some eyebrows twitching and lips pursed. To be fair, in-flight meals are known to have a reputation for being bland, not up to par, some are even visually depressing. But it’s not here to stay. Sky-caterers have also upped the notch by sharpening their culinary skills. Let’s take a look at the best of airline food, from the low cost, short haul and long haul categories of the Asia Pacific Airline Food Awards, conducted by global travel search site, Skyscanner.

Skyscanner’s results show that Tiger Airways, Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia have topped the low cost, short haul and long haul categories for the awards, respectively. Tiger’s triumph saw fellow Singaporean low cost carrier Scoot taking second place, followed by AirAsia, Korea’s Jeju Air and China’s Spring Airlines.

Singapore Airlines takes the honour for best airline food, for short hauls.

“Singapore Airlines is honoured to have won the Short Haul Airline Food category in the Skyscanner Asia Pacific Airline Food Awards. We are grateful that we have been recognised by the panel for our menu programme which undergoes intensive development and refreshes throughout the year in our commitment to constantly enhance our in-flight food and beverage offerings. These developments ensure that SIA continues to adapt to the needs of our customers,” commented Nicholas Ionides, vice-president, Public Affairs, SIA.

SIA took to third place when it comes to long hauls, with Garuda Indonesia favoured at number one.

The inaugural award takes into consideration the feedback through survey, given by 209 participants from Asia Pacifc markets such as Australia, New Zealand, China, India, Indonesia, Philippines and Korea. Over 1,400 international travellers were polled for feedback, of which 39 per cent are positive that food served on board are “good and improving”, 28 per cent placed orders on special requirement diets with eight per cent choosing it as it “tasted better”.
